Lots of luck today. I only got out for a couple hours and got some really good birds. First stop was Ashley High School to check on the Ross's Goose from a couple weeks ago. No luck there.
White Ibis.
Next was Fort Fisher. The light was really bad so the photos stink and I am only posting these because they are some notable birds. The Coquina Overlook had tons of scoters including Surf and Black but the photos are bad and I hope to go back later in good light.
The Aquarium pond is hosting some of the same birds I saw same time last year.
4 Birds with one shot! From left to right: Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Common Goldeneye and Gadwall. I can only assume this is the same goldeneye as last year but she definitely looks more mature now. A nice flesh colored tip to the bill.
After some deliberation we agreed this pair were Mottled Duck! Sherry had a 50x zoom point and shoot and Bruce noted a diagnostic gape when blown up. The warm buffy tones in the breast and flanks also help.
We decided to head a little further down the spit to try for Sedge Wren but instead got good looks at a Virginia Rail and Sora. Unfortunate the light was way worse and the camera sensor was hardly picking the birds out.
Good enough for a diagnostic for Virginia Rail.
The Sora was so bold, he was feeding and making funny noises for a good ten minutes while we watched.
Great times! Brunswick County CBC tomorrow. Hope it stops raining.
